There are 10 enthusiastic members in our Active School Team – 2 representatives from second class up. We discuss what is going well on yard and as regards activity levels. They also highlight issues and came up with several solutions to improve our fun and active level at school. The Active School Team are super – doing surveys as required, zoning the yard and keeping the PE storeroom in check.
We are also extremely fortunate to have most of 5th class trained up as Playground Leaders. The Playground Leaders have developed great skills, whilst helping other children to have more fun at lunch times.
Where would we be without them? Having our PE uniforms ready, picking us up late after training, checking we have our Active Homework completed, helping out with BeActive!
A special thanks also must be given to some of our parents. Martin’s dad for training us in both Gaelic and Soccer.
We also need to thank the parents who came in to do Land Paws, Gymnastics and Tag Rugby with us during Active School Week.
A special word of thanks to Aughadreena NS for lending us a few of their helmets for our hurling lesson as part of Active Schools Week. Sharing is Caring – and we will return the compliment sometime.
Transition Year students in Loreto College organised a lovely day for all local schools in Breffni Park. Each school brought their girls Gaelic team with them. Four of the past students looked after us really well and we got meet up with some of our friends from neighbouring schools. It was a fantastic and well run day and it was made all the better by bringing home the cup.
Killygarry NS avails of many of the activities offered to schools – from Tug of War to Basketball and TriHeroes. We also communicate some of the upcoming events via text and on our school website. Check out their website for the most up-to-date details: http://www.cavansportspartnership.ie
Cavan GAA County Board & Cumann na mBunscoil
We particularly love getting to play against neighbouring schools!
Irish Heart Foundation
The Irish Heart Foundation has provided us with – The Irish Heart Let’s Get Active Award – as a fun way to encourage children to get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.
We have free pocket planners to let the children track how much activity they do each day. After the 4 weeks – each child is awarded a certificate of achievement – also supplied by the Irish Heart Foundation.
Three of our teachers have also availed of the Irish Heart Foundation’s ‘Hand’s for Life’ CPR training programme.
Cavan Sports Complex
Each year Cavan Sports Complex organises a Swimming Gala. It is great fun meeting with other children our age who enjoy swimming. And of course, the day away from books is a bonus!
Local Clubs and Organisations
When local clubs and organisations are organising active events – our teachers give us the notes to bring us or we put them on the school website. We really enjoy going to the different events that are organised in our community.
County Cavan Athletics Board
Each year, the County Cavan Athletics Board organises a Cross Country event in Killenkere. These are distance races across a field with schools entering individuals or teams of up to six children. Our Run Around Europe and the training runs with Ms White has us well prepped for this fun day.
